Frequently Asked Questions
What is a trichologist?
A trichologist is a specialist who assesses and supports people experiencing hair loss, thinning hair and scalp conditions.
What happens during a trichology consultation?
Your consultation will include a detailed discussion about your hair, scalp, health and lifestyle, followed by a close examination of your hair and scalp.
What types of hair loss can you help with?
Vanessa can assess many forms of hair loss, including female and male pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, telogen effluvium and hair loss linked to stress, hormones or nutritional factors.
Can you help with an itchy or flaky scalp?
Yes. Trichology consultations can help identify possible causes of itching, flaking, irritation, redness and other ongoing scalp concerns.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can book a consultation directly without being referred by your GP or another healthcare professional.
Should I wash my hair before my appointment?
It is usually best not to wash your hair on the day of your consultation, as this allows Vanessa to assess your scalp in its natural condition.
Will I receive a diagnosis during my consultation?
Vanessa will explain her findings and discuss possible causes of your symptoms. In some cases, further tests or a referral to your GP or dermatologist may be recommended.
Will I need blood tests?
Blood tests may sometimes be recommended when hair loss could be linked to factors such as iron levels, thyroid function, hormones or nutritional deficiencies.
How long does it take to see an improvement?
Results vary depending on the cause of the condition and the treatment recommended. Hair grows slowly, so improvements may take several months to become noticeable.
Where are consultations available?
